Over 490 DCA members and guests, including a record number of first time attendees, gathered February 6 –11 at The Grand Wailea Resort in Maui, Hawaii for DCA’s 2017 Annual Convention. The event was a well-blended mix of business and pleasure and featured the installation of the 2017 Board of Directors.
Dale Mykyte, chief executive officer of Pe Ben USA, Inc., in Houston, Texas, was named the 2017 DCA president, succeeding Dale Anderson, executive vice president for Miller Pipeline in Indianapolis, Indiana. Jay Osborn, president, Q3 Contracting in Little Canada, Minnesota was elected vice president and Michael Hickey, executive vice president of operations for The Hallen Construction Company, Island Park, New York was elected treasurer.
Elected to two year terms on the Board of Directors are: Tom Clapper, vice-president and co-owner of TekRock Trenching LLC in Georgetown, Texas; Kevin Parker vice president of safety, health, training and environmental compliance for Mears Group in Houston, Texas and Ben Nelson, vice president operations for Michels Corporation in Kirkland, Washington. Jim Lagios, president of Atlas Trenching in Rockville, Minnesota was elected for a one year term.
Greg Gapinski, president of Snelson Companies, Inc. in Sedro Woolley, Washington and Ray Swerdfeger, president of K.R. Swerdfeger Construction in Pueblo West, Colorado and Jon Heinen, vice president business development of Drilling Mud Direct, are currently finishing two year terms.
Kevin Michels, vice president of fleet and equipment of Michels Corp in Brownsville, Wisconsin was named past president director; Dan Carson, president of Carson Corporation in Lafayette, New Jersey was appointed as director at large for a one-year term; Randy Hayes, corporate sales director of Vacuworx in Tulsa, Oklahoma was elected associate member director for a two-year term.
DCA kicked off the convention with the Registration Party sponsored by Vacuworx on Monday. While registering for the convention, attendees enjoyed a Hawaii inspired party with refreshments, games and local musicians. Monday afternoon Sharewell sponsored a Board of Directors and Leadership Council luncheon.
The annual Past President’s Dinner, sponsored by Midwestern Manufacturing Company, was held Monday evening at Sugar Beach.
Working committees convened on Tuesday and discussed agenda items and issues facing the association and the industry. For committee minutes please see the Members Only section of the DCA website.
The Welcome Reception and Dinner, sponsored by Caterpillar, was held at Molokini Gardens. The tropical inspired party featured a lively band, dancers and plenty of refreshments.
Wednesday morning’s Opening Keynote Breakfast sponsored by Case Construction Equipment, included a video tribute to 2016 DCA President Dale Anderson. The speaker, sponsored by McElroy Manufacturing, was Jason Dorsey, chief strategy officer at The Center for Generational Kinetics, a senior writer at The Weekly Standard
, a Fox News contributor and the author of two New York Times
Directly following the Opening Keynote Breakfast was a DCA Town Hall and Business Session.
Wednesday night’s Auction Reception, sponsored by Volvo Construction Equipment, Silent Auction sponsored by Express 4 x 4 Truck Rental and DCA Auction, sponsored by Ritchie Bros., with Honorary Member Butch Graham, raised almost $1,000,000 to support the association’s scholarship program and general activities.
Purchasing vacations, equipment and novelty items, once again DCA Members showed their support for the Association with their generosity.
Thursday morning’s Keynote Breakfast, sponsored by Subsite Electronics, was an entertaining session with speaker Jon Dorenbos, sponsored by Komatsu America. Dorenbos is an inspirational speaker and football player for the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Arthur T. Everham Safety Award winners as well as the recipients of the DCA - Dale R. Michels and Curtis Allen Scholarship were announced during Thursday’s Closing Keynote Breakfast.
The DCA Golf Classic, sponsored by American Augers, was held Thursday afternoon at Wailea Golf with beautiful weather and a challenging course.
Friday morning’s Build Your Own Boat team-building activity was sponsored by HammerHead and a huge success.
The annual convention wrapped up with a fun, exciting and yet elegant evening of dinner and dance with Friday night’s President’s Reception, sponsored by Deere and T.T. Technologies and the President’s Dinner, sponsored by Vermeer.
The tours, food, fun and entertainment rounded out the five days of enjoyable events.
